Cefalù

Full Day

Cefalù, located on the northern coast of Sicily on the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a popular site with its fascinating history, lovely beaches, picturesque harbor, and waterfront restaurants serving delicious, fresh seafood. We will begin our walking tour in Cefalù‘s medieval centro storico (historic centre). First, we will visit the Duomo (if open), built by the Norman King Roger II in the 12th Century and containing some of the oldest, finest Byzantine church mosaics in Sicily. Next we will wander around the town’s quaint streets and stop at the 9th Century Lavatoio (Laundry), where the local people did their washing in spring-fed basins. Next we will stroll by the harbor with its many colorful fishing boats, a popular setting for many movies including the 1989 film Cinema Paradiso.

If time permits after lunch, we will hike up La Rocca (The Rock) to the 5th Century Tempio di Diana (Temple of Diana – goddess of the hunt, the moon, and childbirth),and the ruins of a fortress. Yes, there are many steps! Our reward will be the magnificent views.
