Gole dell’Alcantara and Francavilla di Sicilia

Full Day

About 600,000 years ago, a small volcano erupted at Mt. Etna and poured forth enormous quantities of lava that formed Gole dell’Alcantara. After arrival, we will descend on foot to the entrance of the gorge to discover a spectacular view of the whole area. The beautiful stone-cliff tower forms pentagonal and hexagonal prisms, irregular shapes that interplay with the light and create forms – both graceful and monstrous. A natural botanical reserve is also located in the park, and your guide (an expert in botany) will provide much information about the flora and fauna.

Afterwards we will explore the village of Francavilla di Sicilia, where a violent battle occurred between the Spaniards and Austrians in the 16th Century. Here we will also visit the Capucin Monastery, founded in the 16th Century.
